Could probiotics reduce anxiety & depression?

A new placebo-controlled trial from University College Cork, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has shown the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus JB-1 to significantly reduce stress, anxiety and depression-related behaviours in mice. The leading researched, Professor John Cryan at the University's Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre also reported significantly lower levels of corticosterone (a stress-induced hormone) in mice given the rhamnosus probiotic. This research reports a link between the gut and the brain, suggesting the ability of the gut to alter brain neurochemistry; a significant development in gut research.
This is not the first study to suggest a link between probiotics, prebiotics, and stress. An American study emerged a few months ago, suggesting that prebiotics could help with stress.
