Review shows Probiotics cut stomach upsets by a day

Probiotics can cut diarrhoea, such as that from the infamous norovirus, by up to one day according to a large Cochrane review of probiotics & diarrhoea - looking at 63 studies including more than 8,000 people. Futhermore, the review showed that probiotics cut the possibility of sickness for longer than four days by 60%. Stephen Allen, acting lead researcher from the School of Medicine at the University of Swansea said, "Most trials reported that probiotics reduced diarrhoea...the beneficial effect was consistent and significant across many different types of trials." The highly respected Cochrane Library highlighted in their review the susceptibility of hospital patients contracting C. difficile when taking antibiotics, emphasising the importance of taking probiotics alongside a course of antibiotics. The review also pointed out the need to look deeper into different probiotic species and strains, as some probiotics will target diarrhoea better than others.
