New 'Ultimate Probiotic' used in treating Clostridium difficile

Posted 1 year ago by Soraya in General Health News

Probiotics as we know them are often consumed via a capsule, powder or yoghurt drink but a new radical treatment for Clostridium difficile sufferers is emerging stateside. As antibiotics lose their effectiveness in fighting the superbug, probiotics are taking a more prevalent role and researchers are now trying something new; transplanting fecal matter from healthy patients into the colons of C. diff sufferers. The aim is that the good bacteria from the healthy patient fights off the C. diff infection and repopulates the colon. Lawrence Brandt, one of the pioneers behind the treatment is calling it the 'Ultimate Probiotic'. He has performed 17 of the procedures so far and is promoting the treatment as the best way to improve the health of C. diff patients. Thus far, however, its effectiveness as a treatment has not been studied in great enough depth. Pilot studies and further research is in the pipeline to go ahead so watch this space. Until then though, we are very happy with our capsules and powders!
