New probiotic research has revealed the potential of a specific L. acidophilus strain in combating auto-immune diseases such as IBD and, possibly, colon cancer. A genetically tweaked strain of L. acidophilus was fed to mice with two different models of colitis. The results were staggering, after just 13 days the probiotic had eradicated inflammation of the colon and effectively halted progession of the disease by 95% in the mice. This new research opens up the possibility of future drug-free treatments for those who suffer with Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, an exciting prospect.
