Probiotic research commitments made by US Government agency

Probiotics, and other promising sciences, were highlighted for commited study in a five year plan by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) last Friday. NCCAM - a branch of the US National Institutes of Health - stated: "There is scientific evidence that probiotics are useful in treating some forms of diarrhea, and emerging evidence that they may be helpful in treating a number of other conditions. NCCAM supports a large portfolio of research on probiotics." Conversely, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has intentions to implement strigent legislation that impedes health claims made with the support of probiotic science. This has provoked global controversy amongst probiotic researchers, resulting in an impressive petition against the EU status quo that has amounted 143 academic signatories thus far. Let's hope that this positive move across the pond can add yet more pressure to EFSA.
