Probiotics linked to prevention of premature birth

Posted 1 year ago by Jacob in General Health News

New microbial research has found that an inflammatory response to certain strains of bacteria colonising the placenta may be responsible for some fetal injuries, complications & premature cases of labour. The research found that specific bacterial strains could increase or decrease the risk of systematic inflammatory conditions. The study looked at bacteria cultured from dry blood spots found on 527 newborns, delivered via Caesarean section.  Results showed that placentas found with colonies of pathogenic bacteria commonly linked with bacterial vaginosis had increased levels of proinflammatory proteins.  Furthermore, placentas that had been colonised with the Lactobacillus strains of probiotic bacteria had lower levels of proinflammatory proteins.  Study researcher Andrew Onderdonk said, "Our data suggests that the targeting of placental colonisation by specific drugs or probiotics during early pregnancy may hold promise for preventing not only preterm birth but also the devastating and far-reaching inflammatory consequences in premature newborns."
