Mangoes & grapes show prebiotic potential
Posted 1 year ago by Soraya in General Health News
Researchers at the MACS-Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in India have identified the presence of prebiotics in mangoes and grapes, particularly in one type of Indian mango. Scientists at the ARI looked at 90 fruits and edible plants, over a period of 10 years exploring their potential to multiply probiotics in the digestive system. The prebiotic fibres found in the mangoes were shown to help grow Lactobacillus rhamnosus in particular. The results were published late last year in the Journal of Scientific and Industrial Research. If more evidence can back up these findings, mangoes and grapes would be a welcome source of prebiotics - arguably tastier than the currently accepted prebiotic foods such as onions, leeks and garlic!
