Probiotics helpful in reducing recurrent UTI's in women

A new double-blind placebo-controlled study has revealed that probiotics can be helpful in reducing recurrent urinary tract infections in women. The study looked at 100 women with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections, who were randomised into two groups. One group received an intravaginal suppository of the Lactobacillus crispatus LACTIN-V probiotic and the other received a placebo via the same method. The process was carried out once a day for five days and then once a week for 10 weeks. The results showed that the group that received the probiotic suffered with 50% less infections than those given the placebo. The study leader, Ann Stapleton went on to state, "vaginal Lactobacillus could replace long-term antimicrobial preventive treatments."
