Prebiotic supplementation at times of heightened stress may boost the immune system and digestive health. A study of American students, in their run up to examinations, showed that a daily supplementation of prebiotics reduced the amount of days spent with illness by 40%. Furthermore, the GOS (galactooligosaccharide) based prebiotic reduced the occurence of digestive upsets during autumn exams. The randomised, parrell, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, observed 419 university students randomly assigned to receive 0, 2.5 or 5.0 grams of prebiotics for eight weeks before, during and after examinations. The results showed the prebiotic supplementation reduced symptoms of digestive upsets such as indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, & diarrhoea. The researchers concluded, "Future studies should determine the mechanisms by which galactooligosaccharides improve health outcomes within the brain-gut-enteric microbiota axis, because these findings may have wide applicability beyond academic stress."
