The probiotic strain Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04, found in For daily wellbeing EXTRA Strength, has demonstrated the ability to reduce the incidence, duration and severity of upper respiratory tract illnesses, as well as significantly reducing chest illness severity and medication use. The Australian led study carried out by the Griffith University, Queensland and the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra enrolled 474 healthy and physically active young volunteers for a 150 day period. The results showed a reduction of upper respiratory tract illness and chest illness of 30-50% when they received B. lactis Bl-04. Peter Fricker, Director of the Australian Institute of Sport commented, "These findings, which demonstrate benefit in healthy individuals, hold promise for other groups in the population who may be more susceptible to respiratory infections such as the young and elderly."
