A newly published trial in the British Journal of Nutrition has found that the supplementation of Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12®, found in For maintaining regularity, can increase the body's IgG3 antibody levels by 66%. The study, carried out in collaboration with Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan, the University of Milan, and the University of Southampton, observed 106 adult volunteers who were randomly assigned to receive either B. lactis BB-12® (at a dosage of 1 billion CFU's) or a placebo every day for a six week period. After the initial two weeks of supplementation, the volunteers received a seasonal influenza vaccine. Four weeks after this, at the end of the trial, the researchers recorded significant increases in flu antibodies in the B. lactis BB-12® group compared to the placebo group. Birgit Michelsen, director of scientific affairs, Health & Nutrition Division at Chr. Hansen stated, "The outcomes of this study, as well as data from previous studies, show that supplementation of BB-12® results in a strengthening of various parts of the immune system."
