An army marches on its gut

Probiotics may soon be apart of Australian army ration packs in an attempt to modernise soldiers' diets on frontline operations. The redeveloped packs will offer eight different menus to soldiers including; Chicken Vindaloo and Spaghetti Bolognaise as well as including vitamin and probiotic supplements. Army nutritionist Chris Forbes-Ewan, speaking on behalf of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, cited probiotics as a key area of development specifically to maintain gut health. Talking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, he commented that probiotics may help to prevent common frontline health conditions such as diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and infections from pathogenic bacteria.
