September can often be a time for a few sniffles to appear, as children converge on schools nationwide with their own unique set of bacteria to share! Lovely! We've asked our nutritionists and nutritional therapists to compile some simple tips to help keep their little immune systems in tip-top shape for the new school year. Here's 3 top tips:

1. Sleep

Not enough sleep is known to suppress the immune-system, and consequently this may impair its ability to fight off pathogenic bacteria which could cause a cold or cough developing. Make sure they're getting enough sleep for their age, as well as good quality sleep - experts recommend anywhere between 10-14 hours a night. Smart devices have been shown to emit a blue light which not only disrupts our circadian rhythm - our internal clock - but also hinders our melatonin production which is a vital hormone for proper sleep.

2. Green leafy vegetables

Everyone knows that vegetables are great for our health, and it's just as true for children. Try and pack in as much green leafy vegetables as possible, this can include veg such as kale, spinach, broccoli, chard, lettuce, watercress, and even bok choy. These nutrient dense foods contain a plethora of vitamins (A, B, C, and K), as well as being packed with iron and calcium. The body often needs a little dietary fat to help it absorb all of these nutrients, so drizzle some uncooked olive oil over your salads.

3. Hand washing!

We're definitely advocates of exposing kids to bacteria in our environment, especially outside in nature and with our household pets, as this is increasingly reported as being good for the development of their immune systems. However, good hygiene practices are still vital in preventing the spread of common infections. Wash their pilfering little mitts especially before eating.
