Wren Laboratories is a family-run business based near Andover, Hampshire. It produces a range of health supplements called ‘OptiBac Probiotics’. The company is committed to producing high-quality products, providing excellent customer service and achieving a vibrant, inspiring workplace. The products are sold to health food stores and pharmacies across the UK, Ireland and many export markets.


The primary role of the Accounts Manager is to prepare accurate monthly management accounts for the two sister companies and the holding company, ensuring compliance with all taxes, supplying budgets, forecasting and sales analysis information for the senior management team and the company board of directors. In addition, to manage the accounts team of four, mentoring, guiding and appraising the staff members.

Tasks & Responsibilities

The role is varied and tasks include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Overview of the management accounts for Medipharma Ltd including prepayments, accruals, trial balance on a monthly basis.

  • Prepare the management accounts for Wren Laboratories Ltd including prepayments, accruals and trial balance on a monthly basis.

  • Prepare the management accounts for the Holding Company.

  • Manage the accounts team of four, guiding, training and appraising performance for each member.

  • Review expenditure on all company credit cards to ensure that expenditure is in line with the expenses policy and VAT rules have been complied with. Posting these onto Sage 50 accounts / Xero and reconciled.

  • Review cash expenditure claim forms, ensuring that expenditure is in line with the expenses policy and VAT rules have been complied with. Posting these onto Sage 50 / Xero and repaying the staff members.

  • Keep the company’s asset registers updated with new purchases and disposals.

  • Complete and submit the VAT returns for all companies ensuring compliance with VAT regulations.

  • Complete and submit the EU Sales return for all companies ensuring compliance.

  • Prepare annual sales and expenditure budgets for all companies along with supporting reasoning.

  • Prepare, update and utilise the company forecast models; run various scenarios for the board.

  • Prepare cash flow projections for Wren Laboratories.

  • Prepare the monthly sales analysis report for the Managing Director.

  • Process and / or review the purchase ledger invoices and payments for Wren Laboratories on to Sage 50 / Xero.

  • Review purchase ledger invoices and authorise payments for Medipharma Ltd.

  • Review bank transactions and reconciliation for all companies.

  • Ensure compliance with export legislation; manage changes as a result of Brexit.

  • Liaise with the external accountants and financial advisor on the company accounts and corporation tax returns.

  • Liaise with the external auditors for the annual audit.

  • Implement in swap from Sage to Xero accounting system.

  • Check and confirm the processing of the monthly payroll on Sage and the payments to employees.

  • Prepare annually P11’ds for any ‘benefits in kind’.

  • Administer / review the company auto enrolment pension and salary sacrifice systems.

  • Experience working in an office environment is essential

  • Experience of managing a small team essential

  • At least 5 year operational experience of accounting in a small / medium business essential

  • Practical experience of Excel essential

  • Sage or Xero accounting software preferable

  • Tax compliance experience essential

  • Export experience beneficial

  • Audit experience beneficial

  • Benefit in kind and P11d experience essential


  • Education to GCSE A* - C standard or equivalent in English and Maths essential

  • ACCA, ACA or CIMA qualified beneficial
